1993

1993

THE GOAL

“1993” is a special animation video produced by the Pixel Dreams team to celebrate the 30-year anniversary of the year 1993, a year with lots of pop culture events that shaped the whole year. The video also acts as a fun history lesson for those who were born post-‘93.

THE CHALLENGE

My role in the project was to develop the scenes, storyboard, and animation for about 1/3rd of the video, while the rest was handled by other members of the Mighty Stone team. With the provided early script from the clients, we had to develop styleframes and storyboards for each scene that could convey the mood & tone as well.

The parts I handled primarily were Clint Eastwood, The First Servicing Mission (STS-61) of the Hubble Space Telescope, the introduction of Apple Newton, and the Home Improvement TV series. Each segment had its own unique visual and animation styles that blended well between retro and modern aesthetics.

For Clint Eastwood scene, the main technique used was frame-by-frame animation with the coat blowing in the wind and the smoke transition. For the space galaxy scene, it all came down to motion graphics and effects. For the Apple Newton scene, the environment and the Newton model were built in 3D with Blender, and finally, it transitioned seamlessly to the Home Improvement poster with a final touch of a frame-by-frame sequence of the character throwing the Pepsi can upward.
